Chalkie AI costs $79.80 a year, but US K-12 teachers can get Claude and ChatGPT free. What to pay for if you don't qualify, with prices as of October 2026.
Chalkie AI is worth paying for only if you teach outside the US K-12 programs that now give away Claude and ChatGPT. A verified US K-12 teacher can get both assistants free, and they write lesson plans, worksheets and rubrics well. Chalkie's real edge is that it hands you finished slides and activity sheets, and its free plan gives you 5 resources a week to see whether you like that.
If you don't qualify for the free programs (you teach outside the US, at a college, as a tutor, or in a private setting), the question is what to pay for instead. We'd pick Zemith Plus at $15.99 a month ($179.88 a year): Claude 5.5 Sonnet and other top models in one chat, Word and PowerPoint files made straight from that chat, and a Library Project that turns your own materials into quizzes, flashcards, a study guide and a podcast for students. That's more than Chalkie Pro does, at more than twice the price.
Prices in US dollars, as of October 29, 2026:
| Price | What you get | Who it's for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zemith Plus | $15.99/mo or $179.88/yr | Claude 5.5 Sonnet and other models, Word and PowerPoint files from chat, Library quizzes, flashcards and podcasts, 1.5M credits | Any teacher, tutor or instructor |
| Chalkie Free | $0 | 5 resources a week, export to Google and Microsoft | Trying it out |
| Chalkie Pro | $79.80/yr ($6.65/mo) | 200 resources a month, standards alignment, lessons up to 25 slides | Lesson slides and sheets |
| Chalkie Max | $155.88/yr ($12.99/mo) | 400 resources a month, lessons up to 35 slides, unlimited themes | Heavy slide users |
| MagicSchool Plus | $99.96/yr or $12.99/mo | Unlimited generations, 50+ student tools | US-style K-12 workflows |
| ChatGPT for Teachers | Free, verified US K-12 educators | ChatGPT workspace, file uploads, search | US K-12 teachers |
| Claude for Teachers | Free year, verified US K-12 educators | Premium Claude with teaching skills | US K-12 teachers |

Usually not yet, because the general assistants are now free for you. Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers in July 2026 for verified US K-12 educators, and its August 28, 2026 post says qualifying schools and districts that sign up by June 30, 2027 get a year free. OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teachers, launched November 19, 2025, is free for verified US K-12 staff, and OpenAI's help center says through June 2027 (one version of that page says June 2028, so check it before you rely on the date).
Both can draft a lesson plan, a rubric or a parent email in seconds. What they won't always give you is a polished 20-slide deck with a theme, and that's the gap Chalkie fills. If slides are most of your prep time, Chalkie Free costs nothing to test, and Pro at $79.80 a year is cheap next to what the other tools charge.
The free programs stop at the US K-12 line, and plenty of teachers sit on the wrong side of it. They don't cover:
Anthropic's higher-education program is a separate, campus-level deal. For these readers, a paid plan is the honest answer, and the choice is between a single-purpose tool and a general one.
For the plan itself, the general assistants win. Claude and ChatGPT take your exact brief ("year 9 fractions, 45 minutes, mixed ability, one starter and a plenary") and rewrite it as many times as you like. Chalkie's strength is the format: it builds slides and sheets to a template, with standards alignment on Pro.
A general assistant can reach the same result if it can make files. In Zemith, ask a model such as Claude 5.5 Sonnet for a lesson plan, then ask in the same chat for a PowerPoint deck and a Word worksheet. The real files appear in the chat's Files panel, ready to edit. Zemith builds them in a cloud sandbox, so expect plain, editable .pptx and .docx files you can restyle rather than Chalkie's themed templates. Our AI presentation maker page covers how that works.
Three things you don't get from a slide generator.
Study material from your own notes. Create a Project in Library, upload your unit's PDFs, slides and reading list (up to 50 sources on a paid plan), then pick Quiz, Flashcards, Report or Podcast in Studio. The chat answers from your sources and the project instructions you set. The free document to quiz tool lets you try the quiz output before you pay.
More than one model. Switch between Claude and other models in the same chat when one answer is too dense or too thin, instead of paying for two subscriptions.
One bill. Teachers who pay for Chalkie Pro and Claude Pro on monthly billing pay $79.80 plus $240 a year, which is $319.80. Zemith Plus on yearly billing is $179.88, and it covers the slides, the chat and the study outputs. If you pay for Chalkie Pro and MagicSchool Plus together ($179.76), the price is the same as Zemith Plus, so the question is which set of tools you'd rather have.
More on this audience is on the Zemith for educators page.
Say you're teaching a two-week unit on the water cycle and don't qualify for a free program.
Zemith's free plan is chat only, so file creation, Library and the Studio outputs all need Plus or above.
We read Chalkie's and MagicSchool's pricing pages on October 29, 2026, Anthropic's school and district announcement, and search summaries of OpenAI's ChatGPT for Teachers page, since OpenAI's own pages returned an access error. Claude Pro prices come from claude.com/pricing. Zemith's plans, models and Library features were checked against the product's code the same day. We didn't run benchmarks or compare output quality.
If you're a US K-12 teacher, use the free Claude or ChatGPT program first and try Chalkie Free for slides. If you aren't, skip the patchwork: Zemith Plus at $15.99 a month gives you the lesson plan, the PowerPoint and Word files, and quizzes and flashcards from your own materials in one place.
