Perplexity Max costs $200 a month for Claude Opus and OpenAI's top model. A $29.99 alternative with both, cited web search and Sonar Pro, and when to skip it.
The cheapest Perplexity Max alternative depends on which part of Max you want. If it's Claude Opus with web search, Claude Pro (Anthropic) includes Opus, web search and Research for 20 a month. If you want Opus and OpenAI's flagship models side by side, with cited search, you need a multi-model app, and that costs a fraction of Perplexity Max's 200 a month. Perplexity Pro won't do it: Perplexity's help center lists Claude Opus and GPT-5.5 as Max and Enterprise only.
That multi-model app is what we'd pick, and it's ours. **Zemith Professional is 29.99 a month** (299.88 a year) and includes Claude 5.5 Opus, GPT 6.1 Sol, GPT 6 Astra and Perplexity Sonar Pro in one chat, next to Claude 5.5 Sonnet, Gemini 3.1 Pro and Grok. Web search with cited sources, deep research, and Word, Excel and PowerPoint files are on the same plan, on web, iOS and Android.
200 a month or 2,000 a year. Perplexity Pro ($20 a month) doesn't include Claude Opus or GPT-5.5; Perplexity reserves them for Max and Enterprise.20 a month (17 a month billed yearly) and includes Opus, web search and Research, with usage limits that reset every five hours plus weekly caps.Plans and prices as of October 5, 2026, in US dollars:

Model versions move fast. Perplexity's model page named Claude Opus 4.7 when it was last updated, and it may list a newer Opus by the time you read this. The plan split, Opus on Max only, is the part that matters.
Usually because you want one or two of its models, not the whole $200 bundle. Perplexity Pro gives you Claude Sonnet and GPT-5.4 with search, which is plenty for most lookups. The jump to Max buys the flagship models, and with them a set of extras (Comet's Max assistant, Computer credits, unlimited Labs) that many researchers never open.
If Opus is the reason, the honest first answer is Claude Pro. It's $20, and Anthropic's own plan table shows Opus, web search and Research on it. The catch is the usage window: heavy Opus sessions can hit the five-hour limit, and you lose GPT and Gemini entirely.
The middle ground is a plan that gives you both families of flagship models plus search, without paying for agent credits and a browser you won't use. That's where Zemith Professional fits.
Zemith uses credits, so here's the math before you buy. Claude 5.5 Opus costs 80 credits per 100 input tokens and 400 per 100 output tokens, and each web search call costs 400 credits (from Zemith's model and tool price lists, October 2026).
Take a research question where Opus reads 10,000 tokens (your question plus the search results) and writes 1,500 tokens including its reasoning:
Professional's 3 million credits cover about 200 of those a month, roughly seven a day. Most people don't need Opus for every search, though. The same answer on Claude 5.5 Sonnet costs about 8,400 credits. A month of three Opus answers and five Sonnet answers a day comes to about 2.55 million credits, which leaves room for a few deep research runs at 100,000 each.
If you run out, top-ups start at 10 for 800,000 credits, about 55 more Opus answers of that size. Even a heavy month with two top-ups is 49.99, a quarter of Perplexity Max. These figures are arithmetic from published rates for an assumed answer size. Longer documents and long chats cost more.
Here's one workflow that uses the models the way Max users tend to:
What changes for you is mostly money and switching. You stop paying $200 for models you use a few times a day, and the comparison between Claude and GPT happens in one thread instead of two tabs. For more on how researchers use it, see Zemith for researchers.
And if you only ever want Opus, Claude Pro at $20 is cheaper than Zemith. A few other limits to know: Claude 5.5 Opus can't be set as your default model on Zemith (you pick it per chat), and it isn't offered inside Library projects. Our Zemith vs Perplexity comparison covers the wider choice, and if you're weighing ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro instead, see ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro in one subscription.
On October 5, 2026, we read Perplexity's help center articles for Max and for the models included on each plan, Anthropic's Claude pricing page, and Finout's April 2026 Perplexity pricing guide, since perplexity.ai's own pages returned errors to our requests. Zemith's models, plan access and credit rates come from its product code and pricing page on the same day. The credit examples are calculations from those rates, not measured usage, and we didn't benchmark answer quality.
Perplexity Max is a good product for people who use all of it, including the browser assistant and agent credits. If you're looking at it for Claude Opus and OpenAI's top model, that's 200 a month for two models. Claude Pro gets you Opus alone for 20. For Opus, GPT 6.1 Sol and Astra, Sonar Pro and cited search together, Zemith Professional at $29.99 is the alternative we'd choose, with deep research, real files and mobile apps on the same plan.
