Copilot Business is $21 per user a month on top of a Microsoft 365 plan. Here is a cheaper team option with Claude, GPT and Gemini that saves files to OneDrive.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is an add-on, not a plan: it costs $21 per user per month on annual billing ($25.20 if you pay monthly) and only works if each person already has a Microsoft 365 Business license. The cheaper alternative for a small team is an AI workspace that writes the Word, Excel and PowerPoint files for you and saves them to OneDrive, without putting AI inside the Office apps. The trade is real: you give up in-app help, and you gain model choice and a lower bill.
That alternative is Zemith. A Zemith Plus seat is $15.99 a month ($179.88 a year) and includes Claude, GPT and Gemini models, web search, deep research, real .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files, and Microsoft 365 plugins for Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint. You add teammates as seats on the web and can mix Plus and Professional seats. Your Microsoft 365 licenses stay exactly as they are.
Prices in USD per user, as of October 2026. Copilot figures are from Microsoft's Copilot pricing page; Zemith figures are from Zemith pricing.
| Copilot Business (annual) | Copilot Business (monthly) | Zemith Plus | Zemith Professional | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per user per month | $21 ($18 until Dec 31, 2026, first year) | $25.20 | $15.99 monthly, $14.99 on yearly billing | $29.99 monthly, $24.99 on yearly billing |
| Five users, per year | $1,260 ($1,080 with the promo) | $1,512 | $959.40 monthly, $899.40 yearly | $1,799.40 monthly, $1,499.40 yearly |
| Needs a Microsoft 365 license first | Yes | Yes | No, but you still need one to open the files in Office | No |
| Where the AI lives | Inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams | Same | A chat that creates and saves files | Same |
| Models | Microsoft's | Microsoft's | Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok and more | Adds the top GPT, Claude Opus and Gemini models |
The yearly Zemith figures are the plan prices ($179.88 and $299.88) divided by 12. The Copilot promo only helps customers who already pay for Microsoft 365, and it ends the day the year turns.
A Zemith seat also covers a choice of Claude, GPT and Gemini models in the same chat, deep research, and image and video generation in Creative Studio. Copilot Business, in turn, comes with Microsoft's agents and Copilot Studio, which Zemith doesn't have.
It's worth it when your team lives in Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel all day and wants the AI sitting right there. Microsoft's own description lists assistance in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams for summarizing email, drafting documents, analyzing data and capturing meeting notes, plus agents you can build in Copilot Studio (Microsoft Copilot blog, December 2025). A tool that edits the document you have open is a different product from a chat that makes a new one.
It's harder to justify when most of the work is "write me a first draft of this proposal and the pricing sheet." For that job, the difference between five Copilot seats and five Zemith seats is about $360 a year at list price, or about $180 in the first year if you qualify for Microsoft's promo. The promo price then rises back to $21.
The add-on is only part of the bill. Business Standard moved from $12.50 to $14 per user per month in July 2026, Business Basic from $6 to $7, and Business Premium stayed at $22, according to Office Watch's pricing report (a secondary source; Microsoft's plan page blocked our automated check). Microsoft also sells bundles. Five people on Business Standard plus Copilot Business come to $35 per person per month at list price, or $2,100 a year.
You'll keep paying for the Microsoft 365 license either way if your team opens Word and Excel files, so compare the add-on to the AI seat, not to the whole stack. What you can drop is the idea that you need Copilot to get AI help on your Office work.
You ask in a chat, Zemith builds the real file in a sandbox, and you approve the save. Concretely, on Plus:
The save tools, such as "Save new Word documents" and "Save new Excel workbooks", can be set to Always allow once you trust them. Sending email can be allowed the same way. Replacing an existing document, workbook or deck never can: it asks every time, so a chat can't overwrite a file on its own. There's more on this flow in how to use AI to write a self-evaluation from your work and on slide output in the AI presentation maker.
For a team, the owner buys extra seats on the web, one per person, and each seat has its own monthly credit allowance (1.5 million on Plus, 3 million on Professional). A deep research report costs 100,000 credits, so credit-heavy work eats a Plus allowance faster than plain drafting. Top-ups start at $10 for 800,000 credits. The pricing and seat logic is the same one described in ChatGPT Business alternative for small teams.
Quite a bit, and you should know before you switch:
If one or two of those are what your team pays for, buy Copilot Business for those people and put the others on Zemith seats. A mixed team is allowed.
Pick Zemith if people mostly ask for drafts, analysis, decks and research, you want Claude and GPT side by side, and you'd rather not pay $21 more for every seat. It fits a five-person agency, a consultancy or a small finance team. The small business owners page shows the common setups, and the Zemith vs Microsoft Copilot comparison goes through the product differences. Keep Copilot if the point is AI inside Outlook and Teams.
We read Microsoft's Copilot pricing page and Copilot Business announcement on October 20, 2026, and took the Microsoft 365 base-plan prices from a reseller report because Microsoft's plan page didn't load for automated checks. Zemith's prices come from its list prices, and its plugin and approval behavior from the plugin definitions in the Zemith codebase on the same date. We didn't run Copilot Business ourselves and make no claims about its output quality.
If your team wants AI inside Office, Copilot Business is the product, and $21 a seat is the price. If you want first drafts of Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, Claude and GPT in one place, and a lower bill, five Zemith Plus seats cost $899.40 a year against $1,260 for the same five on Copilot.
