Otter Alternative for Transcribing Interviews (2026)

Otter Pro caps file imports at 10 a month. Zemith transcribes uploaded interviews by the minute, then Claude analyzes them. Costs, limits and who should stay.

Kevin·

If you record interviews on a phone or a handheld recorder and upload the files afterwards, Otter's file-import caps are the thing to check before you pay. As of October 21, 2026, Otter's free plan allows 3 imports for the life of the account, and Pro allows 10 imports a month, each up to 90 minutes (Otter pricing). A better fit for that job is a tool that charges by the minute and has no import count, and then lets you analyze the transcripts with a strong model in the same place. Otter is still the better product if you record live meetings or need named speakers on every line.

That per-minute option is what we'd pick, and it's ours: Zemith Plus at $15.99 a month ($179.88 a year). Its Speech to text tool transcribes an uploaded recording with timestamps for 800 credits per started minute, and the plan includes 1.5 million credits a month, enough for about 31 hours of audio if you spend nothing else. The same plan gives you Claude 5.5 Sonnet to summarize, code and compare the transcripts afterwards, and Library Projects to keep a whole study's transcripts together.

TL;DR

  • Otter Free allows 3 lifetime file imports and 30 minutes per conversation. Otter Pro ($16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month billed yearly) allows 10 imports a month, 1,200 imported minutes and 90 minutes per conversation (otter.ai/pricing, October 21, 2026).
  • Zemith has no import count. It bills 800 credits per started minute, so one hour of audio costs 48,000 credits, and Plus covers about 31 hours a month. Each file must be 25 MB or smaller.
  • On price per hour of audio, Zemith is not the cheapest. Otter Pro yearly works out to about $0.42 an hour at full use and Rev Essentials yearly to about $0.31. Zemith Plus is about $0.51 an hour if you spend every credit on transcription, and you also get the chat models.
  • Zemith doesn't join calls, doesn't record live, and its transcript tool shows timestamps but no speaker names.

Sources: Otter pricing and Rev pricing, both read October 21, 2026. Zemith's rate and cap are in the Speech tool; plan prices are on the pricing page. Otter's Free plan is 300 minutes a month, 30 minutes per conversation and 3 lifetime imports. Rev's human transcription starts at $1.99 a minute.

Rev's pricing page shows a notice that its payment system was having technical difficulties when we read it, so check sign-up works before you plan around it.

Is Otter's 10-import limit a problem for interviews?

It is if your interviews arrive as files. Otter counts every uploaded recording against the monthly import cap, whatever its length, so a researcher who finishes twelve interviews in a week hits the Pro limit with two to go. Business lifts it (unlimited imports, 4 hours per conversation), but that's $30 a month, or $19.99 a month billed yearly, per user.

The per-conversation limit matters too. Pro stops at 90 minutes, which covers most single interviews but not a long focus group or an oral-history session.

If you mostly record live on a laptop, none of this applies. Otter's live recording minutes are a separate allowance (1,200 a month on Pro), and its meeting bot is the reason most people choose it.

What does transcribing interviews cost on Zemith?

One hour of audio costs 48,000 credits, because every started minute is 800 credits. Zemith shows the credit quote for the file you picked before you press Transcribe audio, so there's no surprise.

AudioCreditsShare of 1.5M Plus credits
One 30-minute interview24,0001.6%
One 50-minute interview40,0002.7%
Twelve 50-minute interviews480,00032%
30 hours of audio1,440,00096%

A top-up is $10 for 800,000 credits, which is 1,000 minutes, about $0.60 per hour of audio. That's the marginal price once you've used the plan's credits. Credit rates are from the product's code and pricing configuration, October 21, 2026.

Zemith is dearer per hour than Otter Pro yearly (about $0.42 an hour if you use all 1,200 minutes every month) and Rev Essentials yearly (about $0.31). The case for Zemith isn't the transcription rate. It's that the transcript lands next to a model that can read it, in a plan you may already be paying for.

Will your recording fit under 25 MB?

Often, but not always. Zemith accepts MP3, MP4, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG and WebM files up to 25 MB. How long that is depends on the bitrate your recorder uses:

  • At 128 kbps (a common MP3 setting), 25 MB is about 27 minutes.
  • At 64 kbps, a typical voice-memo setting, it's about 55 minutes.
  • At 32 kbps mono, which is fine for speech, it's about 110 minutes.

So a 90-minute interview recorded at a music-quality bitrate needs to be re-exported at a lower one, or split in two. Free tools like Audacity or your phone's own trim feature do either in a minute. WAV files are the usual trap: an hour of WAV is hundreds of megabytes, so convert it first.

How do you go from recordings to findings in Zemith?

Say you have twelve customer interviews of about 50 minutes each and you need themes by Friday.

  1. In Speech, open the Speech to text tab, drop in the first recording, check the quote (40,000 credits for 50 minutes) and click Transcribe audio. Results are kept under Transcriptions, so you can come back to them.
  2. Click Copy, paste the transcript into a text file named for the interview, and repeat for the rest. That's about 480,000 credits for all twelve.
  3. In Library, create a Project and upload the twelve .txt files as sources. A Project holds up to 50 sources on paid plans, and chat answers are grounded in them.
  4. Set the Project instructions once: "These are customer interviews. When you state a finding, say which interview it comes from and quote the line."
  5. Ask Claude 5.5 Sonnet for the themes across all twelve, then for the objections that came up in more than three of them. Switch models in the same chat if you want a second read.

Chat on top of that is cheap compared with the transcription. Reading one 8,000-word transcript (about 11,000 tokens) and writing a 1,500-token summary with Claude 5.5 Sonnet costs roughly 8,500 credits, so summarizing all twelve one by one adds about 100,000 credits. The whole job fits comfortably inside one month of Plus.

If you want the result as a document, ask for a Word file or a slide deck from the same chat. Zemith builds the real file from the conversation on paid plans. The AI transcription page and the Zemith for researchers page cover the same workflow, and our Gemini Notebook vs Claude Projects comparison goes deeper on keeping a pile of sources in one Project.

When should you stay on Otter or pick Rev?

Stay on Otter if you record live. It joins Zoom, Teams and Meet, takes notes as people talk and attaches speaker names. Zemith can't do any of that: it transcribes audio files you upload and nothing else.

Choose Rev if you need a human-checked transcript for quotation or a legal record. Its human service starts at $1.99 a minute, and its AI plans are cheaper per hour than any of the others here.

Look at a dedicated tool too if you transcribe more than about 30 hours a month. At that volume Business plans with high minute pools are the better buy, and Zemith's credits would also be going on everything else you use it for.

How we compared

We read Otter's and Rev's own pricing pages on October 21, 2026 and took Otter's plan limits from the table on its page. Cost per hour is our own arithmetic from those published allowances and prices, assuming you use the full allowance every month. TurboScribe's pricing page wouldn't load for our requests, so it isn't in the table. Zemith's credit rate, file cap, accepted formats, plan prices and Library limits were checked against the product's code and pricing configuration the same day. We didn't test transcription accuracy for any of these tools, so run a clip with your own audio before committing.

The bottom line

If your interviews are recordings you upload and you want to analyze them with Claude afterwards, Zemith Plus at $15.99 a month covers about 31 hours of transcription a month with no import count, and the same credits pay for the summaries and the report. If you live in meetings, or you need speaker names, stay with Otter. For human-checked transcripts, pay Rev.
