Gemini Notebook vs Claude Projects for researching your own documents: prices, limits, outputs, and how to use Claude and Gemini on the same files.
For researching a pile of your own documents, Gemini Notebook (Google, formerly NotebookLM) is the better tool. It answers from your sources with citations, holds 50 sources per notebook even on the free plan, and turns them into audio, video, slides, flashcards and reports. Claude Projects (Anthropic) is the better choice when the job is thinking and writing with those documents: drafting the memo, arguing with the analysis, rewriting the chapter. Most people who do serious document work end up wanting both, which is why the real question is usually whether to pay for both.
You don't have to. Zemith Plus is $15.99 a month ($179.88 a year) and gives you a Library Project where Claude 5.5 Sonnet and Gemini 3.1 Pro both work over the same set of up to 50 sources. Answers come from your files with numbered citations, and you can switch model mid-chat when one explanation doesn't land. The same Project makes a podcast, quiz, flashcards, mind map, infographic, report and summary, and lets you start a live phone call with your sources. From a Project chat you can also ask for a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file built from those sources. Plus works on web, iOS and Android.
Plans and limits as of October 13, 2026, in US dollars:
| Price | Sources per workspace | Models | Built-in outputs | Files you can export | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zemith Plus | $15.99/mo or $179.88/yr | 50 per Project, up to 50 MB each (PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, CSV, EPUB, web pages, YouTube) | Claude 5.5 Sonnet, Gemini 3.1 Pro, GPT, Grok, Kimi and more, switchable mid-chat | Podcast, quiz, flashcards, mind map, infographic, report, summary, live phone call | Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF from a Project chat |
| Gemini Notebook (free) | $0 | 50 per notebook, 100 notebooks | Gemini only | Audio and Video Overviews, slide decks, infographics, mind maps, flashcards, quizzes, reports | Notebook outputs, such as slide decks as PDF |
| Gemini Notebook with Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo | 300 per notebook, 500 notebooks | Gemini only | Same, with 4x the free usage | Same |
| Claude Projects with Claude Pro | $20/mo or $200/yr | Files up to 30 MB each, count limited by Claude's context (expanded by RAG on paid plans) | Claude only | None built in; chat, Research and file creation | Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF from chat |

Gemini Notebook, if research means "find what my sources say and show me where." It's built around source grounding: you add documents, it answers from them and points each claim back to a passage. Google added a cloud computer in July 2026 that lets a notebook write and run code on your sources for data analysis. It launched for AI Ultra users first, with Google saying all AI Pro users on the web would get it in the following weeks (Google, July 16, 2026).
Claude Projects work differently. A Project holds files and instructions that every chat in it can use, and Claude reads them as context rather than as a strict source library. That makes Claude the stronger partner once you know what the documents say and need to do something with it: structure an argument, spot the weak step in an analysis, or write the first draft of a literature review in your own voice. On paid plans, Claude switches to retrieval when project knowledge gets close to its context limit, which Anthropic says expands capacity by up to 10x.
So the honest split: Notebook for reading, Claude for writing. The friction comes when you do both in the same afternoon and your files live in two places.
Gemini Notebook stopped counting daily chats on September 2, 2026. Your allowance is now based on compute: longer chats, more sources and heavier outputs such as Video Overviews and slide decks use more of it, and it refreshes every five hours. Several reports say a weekly cap sits on top, but Google's own announcement doesn't mention one, so treat that as unconfirmed.
Per Google's help center, the free plan gets 100 notebooks with 50 sources each, Google AI Plus ($4.99) gets 200 notebooks with 100 sources, and Google AI Pro ($19.99) gets 500 notebooks with 300 sources. On usage, Plus gets twice the free allowance and Pro four times.
If you mostly hit the five-hour wall on heavy outputs, AI Pro is the straightforward fix. If you hit it because you're asking dozens of questions across long documents, a second model on the same files spreads the load and often gives you a better answer anyway.
Not inside either product. Gemini Notebook runs Google's models, and Claude Projects run Anthropic's. To compare their answers you'd upload the same files twice and keep two subscriptions, which is $39.99 a month for Claude Pro plus Google AI Pro, or $479.88 a year.
A Zemith Library Project does it in one place. You add your sources once, then pick Claude 5.5 Sonnet or Gemini 3.1 Pro (or GPT, Grok and others) in the chat's model menu, and switch whenever you like. Either way the agent searches the Project's sources and cites the numbered excerpts it used, so you can check a claim against the page it came from. Project instructions apply to every chat, so "Answer as a skeptical reviewer and say which document each point comes from" is set once. More on the reading side on the chat with PDF page.
What it costs in credits: uploading a document uses 2,000 credits. A source-grounded question with a few pages of retrieved excerpts typically lands around 5,000 credits on Claude 5.5 Sonnet and closer to 8,000 on Gemini 3.1 Pro, which bills more per token. Plus includes 1.5 million credits a month, so a heavy month of a few hundred questions plus some Studio outputs fits. Studio outputs have fixed prices: flashcards and mind maps 5,000 each, a report 8,000, a quiz or podcast 10,000, an infographic 20,000.
Say you're a consultant with three days to understand a client's market before a workshop.
That's the job two tools normally split, done in one place. The Zemith for consultants page covers the rest of that toolkit, and if you're a student weighing the same tools for exams, the StudyFetch alternative post compares the study-app side.
For a wider look at the two model families beyond documents, see Claude vs Gemini.
We read the Gemini Notebook upgrade page and Google's announcements, and Anthropic's pricing page and help articles, on October 13, 2026. Google's plans page showed local prices from our location, so US prices for Google AI Plus and Pro come from the US page as checked on October 11, 2026, and the plan multipliers from 9to5Google's report. Zemith's plans, models, Library limits and credit prices were checked against the product's code the same day. We didn't run benchmarks.
If you only read documents and want it free, use Gemini Notebook. If you only write with them, Claude Pro is fine. If you want Gemini's grounding and Claude's writing on the same files, put them in a Zemith Project: $15.99 a month gets you both models over up to 50 sources, cited answers, Studio outputs and real Office files, for less than half of paying Google and Anthropic separately.
